The main sport in Hereford like many other cities in the area is football and the main professional team in the area is the Hereford United Football Club which came into existence in the year 1924 and play in the League Two tier of the football hierarchy. They are nicknamed the Lilywhites and play their home games in Edgar Street which has a capacity of well over five thousand. The full name of the ground is Edgar Street Athletic Ground and the main stands include the Merton Stand, Meadow End, Len Weston Stand and also the Blackfriars Street End.

There have been some up and coming plans to rebuild some parts of the arena. The club has suffered relegation in the past and on the plus side they are known for beating Newcastle United Football Club in 1972 as part if their FA Cup campaign.

Also worthy of mention is the fact that it has a skittle league as well and this is goes back as far as the year 1902. It is a properly maintained league and now is served by five separate divisions.
